1. Why are vehicle brakes necessary?

Ans: A brake is a mechanical device, which inhibits motion. Its opposite component is the clutch. Most commonly, brakes use friction to convert kinetic energy into heat, though other methods of energy conversion may be employed. Brakes are generally applied to rotating axles or wheels but may also take other forms, such as the surface of a moving fluid (flaps deployed into water or air). Some vehicles use a combination of braking mechanisms, such as drag racing cars with both wheel brakes and a parachute or airplanes with both wheel brakes and drag flaps raised into the air during landing.

2. What are the steps to be followed while servicing mechanical brakes?

Ans: The steps to be followed while servicing mechanical brakes are:

(i) Remove or unthread the wheel nuts with a spanner and separate the wheel from the brake drum.

(ii) Straighten and pull out the split pin, fitted in the castle nut, using a combination plier.

(iii) Lock the axle shaft and open the castle nut using a socket and handle.

(iv) Lightly hammer the axle shaft using a brass drift to loosen and remove the brake drum.

(v) Remove the brake shoe lock, mount on the anchor pin, with the help of nose pliers.

(vi) Separate the brake shoes from the brake lever cam and steady post.

(vii) Clean the brake shoes and brake drum using emery paper.

(viii) Fit both shoes on the cam and anchor pin and lock them.

(ix) Fit the brake drum over the axle shaft and tighten the castle nut with the help of a socket and handle.

(x) Tighten the brake shoe adjusting nut with a spanner, which expands the shoes and allows them to grip the drum firmly.

(xi) Loosen the adjusting nut slightly and ensure that the wheel rolls freely. Adjust the shoes this way.

(xii) Tighten the main nut and lock it properly.

(xiii) Fit the wheel over the brake drum and tighten the wheel nuts.

(xiv) Perform a road test of the vehicle to ensure proper functioning .

Ans: The steps to be followed while servicing parking brakes are:

(i) Pull up the parking brake lever.

(ii) Count the number of notches the lever has travelled. If it is more than 3 to 4 notches, adjust the brake shoe clearance or adjust the brake cable.

(iii) Regularly check the free operation of the brake.

(iv) Check the brake shoes and adjust the brake tension if needed.

(v) Lubricate or replace parts if required and ensure proper function.
