1. Why did Abbu Khan’s goats want to run away? What happened to them in the hills?
Ans: Abbu Khan’s goats wanted to run away because the goats in hilly regions like to roam around freely in the hilly area rather than being tied to trees or poles. They like to be free and his goats were the best hill breed. In the hills, they were killed by an old wolf who lived in the hills.
2. Abbu Khan said, “No more goats in my house ever again.” Then he changed his mind. Why?
Ans: Abbu Khan had a sad experience with his several pet goats. They all ran away to enjoy freedom. So he decided not to take any more pets. But he changed his mind because he felt very lonely.
3. Why did he buy a young goat?
Ans: Abbu Khan bought a young goat thinking that a young goat would have more A years to spend with him as it will live longer in his company. During these years, the goat would start loving him due to the food and care he gave her. She would never wish to go to the hills.

Discuss the following topics in groups.
1. Why did the wise old bird say, “Chandni is the winner”?
Ans: The wise old bird said that Chandni was the winner because she chose death in an open field over life in a closed hut. For her, freedom was more important than life. She fought at the battle ground with bravery and did not act like a coward. She thought that death while fighting for your rights is far better than giving up like a coward. She did not run away like a coward but stood firmly on her legs like a soldier in front of a treacherous army. Although she gave up her life while fighting for her freedom still her bravery was appreciable.
2. “Death in an open field is better than life in a small hut,” Chandni said to herself. Was it the right decision? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans: Freedom necessitates bravery and the ability to tackle any problem or scenario. Chandni could have returned to Abbu Khan after spotting the wolf. But for her freedom was more valuable than life. To keep her freedom, she chose to battle the wolf, telling herself that success or failure was a matter of chance and that she had to fight hard. She battled with all her might, and she won.
3. Freedom is life. Discuss this with reference to ‘Chandni’ and ‘I Want Something in a Cage’.
Ans: Freedom means living without unnecessary restrictions. In Chandni, the goat refuses to stay confined, choosing freedom over safety despite the danger. She fights bravely against the wolf, proving that dignity matters more than fear. Though Abbu Khan cared for her, she longed for independence. Instead of living in captivity, she preferred to fight for her freedom, even at the cost of her life. Similarly, in I Want Something in a Cage, the man buys birds only to set them free, showing that true happiness lies in freedom. Both stories highlight that freedom is life.
