(ii) Reproductive Phase.

6. What is Plasmogamy?

Ans: Fusion of protoplast without nuclear fusion.

7. Give full form of PPLO.

Ans: PPLO: Pleuropneumonia like organisms.

8. Name the bacteria responsible for the following diseases:

(i) Typhoid.

Ans: Salmonella typhosa.

(ii) Tetanus.

Ans: Clostridium tetani.

(iii) Cholera.

Ans: Vibrio cholerae.

9. What are phytoplanktons?

Ans. These are microscopic, free floating photosynthetic organisms.

10. What type of living beings are included under protista?

Ans. Unicellular organisms which are eukaryotes e.g. Euglena and diatoms.

11. Name two structures of locomotion found in animals of protista.

Ans. Flagella and pseudopodia are two structures of locomotion founding protista.

12. What is diatomaceous earth? Give two economic uses of it.

Ans. Diatoms silica shell do not decay easily and pile up at the bottom of water reservoir to form diatomite earth. Diatomite is porous and inert. Therefore used in filtration of sugar, alcohol. Diatomite earth is used to make sound proof rooms. Diatomite is used as cleansing agent in toothpaste and metal polishes.

13. How is zygospore different from sporangiospores in fungi.

Ans. Asexual formation reproduction of involves non-motile sporangiospores inside sporangia. Sexual reproduction is by Gametangial copulation or conjugation to produce resting diploid spore called zygospore.

14. What are the diagnostic characters of Diatoms?

Ans. Diatoms: This group includes the diatoms and golden algae. The diatoms are one of the most successful groups of organisms. About 550 species, of them are found which are mainly urine. They have no flagella. They lost because of the lightness caused by the storage of lipids in them. They constitute an important phytoplankton component of the oceans. It is estimated that a 60 ton blue whale may have 2 tons of plankton in its gut, most of them being the diatoms.

15. State some features of protista.

Ans. It is a kingdom of unicellular or colonial organisms. It includes aquatic eukaryotes. They bear cilia or flagella for locomotion. Some move with the help of pseudopodia. They are either haploid or diploid.
