Early Life and Family of Nip Baruah

Nip Baruah was born to Chandra Nath Baruah and Junprabha. He was born in 1925 at Guwahati, Assam. The Baruah couple gave birth to nine sons and four daughters. The sons were Brajen Baruah, Dwiban Baruah, Dwipen Baruah, Dwijen Baruah, Nip Baruah, Girin Baruah, Ramen Baruah, Naren Baruah and Dupen Baruah respectively. The girl child was Padmabati Das Baruah, Pratibha Baruah Das, Rambha Baruah and Vibha Barua. All these siblings later became more involved in Assamese films.

Nip Baruah’s entered into the Assamese film industry as a director from his film ‘Smriti Parash.’ He directed a total of 15 films Smriti Parash (1955), Mak Aru Morom (1957), Ronga Police (1958), Bhakta Prahlad (1959), Aamar Ghar (1961), Narakasur (1962), Barua’s Sansar (1970), Suntora (1977), Sonmai (1978), Monima (1980), Aajoli Nobou (1980), Aai Mur Jonome Jonome (1980), Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati (1984), Shakuntala and Shankar Joseph Ali (1985), Antony my name is in 1986 etc.

A total of 19 films were released from 1951-60. Films made by Bhupen Hazarika, Nip Baruah and Brajen Baruah tried to entertain the audience at that time. The films released in this decade are as follows:

The newest Assamese film made in 1952 is “Runumi”.  Directed by Suresh Chandra Goswami, the film is a play written by Heinrich Ibsen in “The Warriors at Helgelend” built with a focus on the top. The film was released in 1952 in Aarti Takis in Jorhat and “Runumi” also managed to get a response from the audience. Despite this the film was closed down by the then Vishnu Ram Medhi’s government for no reason. As a result the audience could not get the opportunity to enjoy the film for a long time.

The film which was shot in Assam and then Naga Hills (Nagaland) starred Kanakalata Saikia, Neeemuddin Ahmed, Suresh Goswami, Indreshwar Barthakur and Hiranmayi Devi in lead roles. The family members of the film director Suresh Goswami have called for making public the reason for the closure of the film and also appealed to the government to restore the film. The film starred Darpanath Sharma as a music director.
