Ans: Physical education was an important part of ancient Indian life. Education was considered holistic, focusing on both the body and the mind. Students in gurukulas practised archery, wrestling, yoga, horse riding, and martial arts. Ancient texts like the Ṛigveda, Mahābhārata, and Charaka-saṁhitā mention physical strength, discipline, and exercise. Physical activities helped people maintain health, courage, discipline, and moral values.
2. Describe the contribution of the Charaka-saṁhitā to physical education.
Ans: The Charaka-saṁhitā explains the importance of exercise and balanced living. According to it, regular exercise makes the body light, strong, stable, and active. It improves digestion, metabolism, and immunity. The text also advises people to exercise in moderation and take proper rest. It shows that ancient India had scientific knowledge about health and physical fitness.
3. How did physical education develop during the medieval period?
