Ans: True.

(c) JCL stands for Job Common Language.

Ans: False.

(d) Application software is written to perform a specific task or process.

Ans: True.

(e) Utility software cannot be considered as an application software.

Ans: True.

Ans: True.

TERMINAL EXERCISE

1. Write any one difference between hardware and software.

Ans:

HardwareSoftware
Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer.Software is a collection of programs and instructions that control computer operations.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of machine language?

Ans: Advantages:

(i) Directly understood by the computer.

(ii) Very fast execution.

Disadvantages:

(i) Difficult to write and understand.

(ii) Machine dependent and error-prone.

3. What is the difference between source program and object program?

Ans:

Source ProgramObject Program
Written in high-level language by the programmer.Converted into machine language by a compiler.
Cannot be executed directly. Can be executed directly by the computer.

4. Explain assembly language. What are its advantages over machine language?

Ans: Assembly language is a low-level programming language developed in the 1950s to reduce the complexity of machine language programming. It is also known as a symbolic language because it uses abbreviations or mnemonic codes instead of 0s and 1s of machine language.

An assembly language program is called a source program and it must be converted into machine language, called an object program, before execution. This conversion is done by an assembler.

Assembly language has a one-to-one correspondence with machine language, which means one assembly instruction corresponds to one machine language instruction.

Advantages of Assembly Language over Machine Language:

(i) It is more standardized and easier to use than machine language.

(ii) It operates more efficiently.

(iii) It is easier to debug.

(iv) Mnemonic codes are easier to remember than binary codes.

(v) Programming becomes less complex and time-consuming.

5. Define operating system. Write down its various functions.

Ans: An operating system is the most important system software and it is an essential software to operate the computer system.

The  functions of an operating system are:

(i) User identification and managing of the resources used by the users. Thus un-authorized users cannot use the computer.

(ii) Sharing of computer resources among many users. The sharing is achieved by permitting simultaneous executions of more than one user program. This is usually called multi – programming. A mix of programs can keep the whole memory occupied, all devices active, and the control unit and ALU constantly busy, thus increasing utilization of hardware.

(iii) Executing batches of programs one after another without human intervention.

(iv) Protection of user’s data and programs.

(v) Controlling the transfer of data and programs between the main memory and secondary storage and other I/O devices.

(vi) Providing programs to select appropriate translators.

(vii) Providing facilities to detect and correct errors in a user’s program.

6. Describe briefly about application software.

Ans: Application software is written to perform a specific task or process, such as accounting, payroll, mailing list, result preparation and so on. The majority of application software is written in high-level languages. Assuming that the task to be carried out has been correctly identified, carefully defined, the prospective user will come across the following alternative sources for this application software.Examples of application software are MS Word, MS Excel, Tally, Photoshop, etc.
