INTEXT QUESTIONS 2.1

State whether the following statements are true or false:

1. Binary logic works on two states.

Ans: True.

2. “ON” state is represented by 0.

Ans: False.

3. The NOR gate represents the complement of the OR operation.

Ans: True.

4. The binary number system is a system of two digits-0 and 1.

Ans: True.

5. 1 = 0 AND 1.

Ans: False.

TERMINAL EXERCISE

1. Define AND gate and its operation.

Ans: An AND gate is a digital logic gate that performs the logical AND operation. It works in the same way as the logical operator “and”.

In an AND gate, the output is 1 (HIGH) only when all the inputs are 1. If any one of the inputs is 0 (LOW), the output becomes 0.

The Boolean expression of AND gate is:

C=A⋅BC = A \cdot BC=A⋅B

where AAA and BBB are inputs and CCC is the output.

Truth Table of AND Gate:

ABC = A·B
000
010
100
111

Thus, an AND gate gives output 1 only when all inputs are 1; otherwise, the output is 0.

2. Differentiate between AND & OR gates.

Ans:

AND GateOR Gate
Output is 1 only when all inputs are 1.Output is 1 when any one or more inputs are 1.
Logical multiplication (·).Logical addition (+).
Output becomes 0 if any input is 0.Output becomes 0 only when all inputs are 0.
Example: A · BExample: A + B

3. What is a universal gate?

Ans: NAND and NOR operations are also known as universal operations because you can generate any other operation through it. These gates are called Universal Gates.

4. How can you create NOR gate using OR and NOT gate?

Ans: A NOR gate is formed by connecting the output of an OR gate to a NOT gate.

The OR gate first adds the inputs, and the NOT gate then inverts the output.

5. Convert (990)10 into binary.

Ans: (990)10 = (1111011110)2

(1111011110)2
