Chapter: 9

Unit – 3: Fun With Games

Let us Think

A. Answer the following:

1. What does the word ‘Hekko’ mean?

Ans: The word “Hekko” means “Challenging the tiger”. ‘Hek’ means to challenge and ‘ko’ means tiger.

2. What are the two teams in the game called?

Ans: The two teams are called Aami and Aakho.

3. How many players are there in each team?

Ans: There are 11 players in each team.

4. What do the players in the Aami team do inside the circle?

Ans: The players in the Aami team stay within the circle by making a human chain. They also try to catch the players of the Aakho team by surrounding them.

5. Why do you think the Aakho team (Tiger) must say “Joko” when they are caught?

Ans: They must say “Joko” to signal surrender. In the story behind the game, “Aakho” represents the Tiger, and saying “Joko” allows them to be released when caught.

B. Think and discuss.

1. If you were playing the game Hekko, would you prefer to be in the Aami or Aakho team? Why?

Ans: I would prefer to be in the Aami team.

Reason: I enjoy games that involve cooperation and teamwork. As a member of the Aami team (which represents “The Man”), I would get to stay inside the circle and form a human chain with my teammates. It would be exciting to work together to surround and catch the “tigers” (Aakho players) to make them surrender. Additionally, since the fastest player on this team is awarded the title of “Khozuba”, it would motivate me to be quick and agile.

(Alternatively, if you prefer strength-based roles: You might choose the Aakho team because they represent the Tiger and get to enter the circle to push opponents out, with the chance to win the title of “Khotiba” if you are the strongest.)

2. If you could add a new rule to the game, what would it be? What would be the benefit of the new rule?

Ans: New Rule: I would add a “Revival” rule. If the Aami team successfully catches an Aakho player and forces them to say “Joko” (surrender), one member of the Aami team who was previously pushed out should be allowed to re-enter the circle.

Benefit: According to the current rules, when an Aami player is pushed out, “he is out and cannot enter again”. Adding this rule would make the game more competitive and give the Aami team a strong incentive to take risks to catch the tigers, rather than just trying to defend their positions. It would keep the game engaging for players who were eliminated early.
