Chapter: 12

Activity 12.1 (Page 206-207)

Read the following conversation between an old grandfather, Mr. Das and 12-year-old grandson’s friend Ravi.

Mr. Das : How are you Ravi and how is your grandfather?

Ravi : I am fine but my grandfather always feels angry and unhappy. He criticises everyone all the time, so no one wants to sit and talk with him. He is boring and not as loving as you are. Why does he behave like that Dadu?

Mr. Das : It is because he has been unwell for a long time. Your grandpa is not getting company from any one, this makes him feel lonely and isolated. In other words, he is suffering physically, as well as mentally due to his old age. He gets angry because he is unsure of himself now and annoys others by his comments. He does not think that he is acceptable in society now. Which is why, he expresses his frustrations by being rude to others without any reason and fault of theirs. Why don’t you spend time with him? Talk to him about your friends, your day in school, a happy incident, a sad one also and you may observe the change in him within a few days.

Ravi : Thank you, Dadu. Now I understand that if someone is sick and emotionally unhappy, he would likely be angry and alienate others.

Answer in brief

1. Give reasons for the loneliness of Ravi’s grandfather.

Ans: Ravi’s grandfather is lonely because he has been unwell for a long time and is not getting company from anyone, which makes him feel isolated. He is suffering physically as well as mentally due to his old age, feels unsure of himself, and thinks that he is no longer acceptable in society.

2. State situations that made Ravi think his grandfather was alienating others.

Ans: Ravi thought his grandfather was alienating others because he always felt angry, unhappy, and constantly criticized everyone. He expressed his frustrations by being rude to people without any reason or fault of theirs, which annoyed them. Because of this behavior, no one wanted to sit and talk with him.

3. Say yes or no:

(a) Do you agree that physical, mental and social health are interrelated?

Ans: Yes, physical, mental, and social health are strongly interrelated. For example, when a person is physically sick, they often become emotionally unhappy (mental health), which can make them angry and cause them to alienate others (social health).

(b) Living with others harmoniously requires a person to be socially healthy. State the reason for your choice.

Ans: Yes. Living with others harmoniously requires a person to be socially healthy because social health gives us the ability to form satisfying positive relationships, understand others’ feelings (empathy), and act appropriately in different social situations.

ASSESSMENT

I. Answer the following Questions

1. Define:

(a) Health.

Ans: Health is defined as a state of complete well-being, which includes physical, mental, emotional, and social health. All these different aspects of health are deeply interrelated. For instance, if a person is suffering physically from a prolonged illness, it can negatively impact their mental and emotional well-being, making them feel lonely or frustrated. This emotional distress can then cause them to isolate themselves or act out in anger, which ultimately affects their social health as well.

(b) Mental health.

Ans: Mental health refers to a state of emotional well-being where an individual possesses a desirable self-image, good self-esteem, and self-confidence. A key aspect of mental health is the ability to successfully cope with stress and emotional distress, which involves managing and regulating one’s emotions during challenging moments. A mentally healthy person is able to handle their frustrations effectively, rather than projecting anger or being rude to others without reason.

(c) Social health.

Ans: Social health is defined as the ability to form satisfying interpersonal relationships with others. A socially healthy person is someone who can build positive connections, easily adapt to different social situations, and act appropriately depending on the circumstances. Furthermore, social health involves adopting core values like Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity in daily life, allowing a person to live harmoniously and show consideration for everyone in their community.
