Activity 11.1 (Page 195)
After observing the pictures, discuss the following—
1. Do you think Mawlynnong Village is a successful example of healthy community living? Give reasons for your answers.
Ans: Yes, Mawlynnong Village is a highly successful example of healthy community living, having been declared Asia’s cleanest village in 2003. It is a successful example because maintaining cleanliness is a collective effort ingrained in the residents from childhood. The villagers demonstrate cooperative living by voluntarily sweeping roads, watering plants, cleaning drains, and using bamboo dustbins placed throughout the village. Furthermore, they practice sustainable waste management by collecting waste in pits to use as manure and actively plant trees to maintain nature’s balance.
2. Do you think modern townships as depicted in Fig 11.2, can offer its inhabitants a safe and healthy environment, as assured by the builders?
Ans: Modern townships can offer a physically safe and healthy environment by providing basic amenities alongside features like shopping arcades, clubs, gymnasiums, clinics, and ample open spaces away from noise and pollution. However, the text highlights that high-income facilities alone do not guarantee a healthy community. A truly healthy community requires its members to continuously work together, share collective responsibility, and develop values of cooperation, tolerance, and mutual respect to maintain and improve those resources.
3. The pictures shown in Fig 11.3, does not reflect signs of healthy community living. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answers.
Ans: Yes, I strongly agree. The slum area depicted in Fig 11.3 lacks the essential features of a clean and hygienic environment necessary for healthy living. The inhabitants live in overcrowded houses surrounded by scattered heaps of garbage and stagnant water, which are potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes and flies. This unhygienic environment, combined with the lack of proper space and poor ventilation, increases the risk of stress and diseases such as malaria, dengue, and airborne illnesses. Additionally, the presence of adjacent railway tracks poses a significant physical danger to both children and adults.
