2. What was the cause of it?
Ans: The cause of the stress was tough academic competition and getting low scores in an examination.
3. How did you manage it?
Ans: I managed it by trying to study harder and listening to music to distract my mind.
4. Can you think any other way by which you could have better managed it?
Ans: Yes, I could have better managed it by adopting Yoga as a way of life, including practicing asanas, pranayama, and meditation. This would help me control my overall response to the difficult situation and reduce physiological and psychological imbalance.

Activity 8.4 (Page 137)
Ramesh and his friends are planning to skip their classes and go for a movie instead. Ramesh is worried as he feels that it is not right to skip the class without informing his parents. But at the same time, he does not want to be seen as a spoilsport by his friends. Finally, he succumbed to the peer pressure. Now, he is disturbed to think what would happen if his parents come to know of it.
Questions
1. Why was Ramesh worried?
Ans: Ramesh was worried because he was in a conflicting situation. He knew skipping class without informing his parents was wrong, but he also feared being judged by his friends (peer pressure). Finally, the fear of his parents finding out caused him mental disturbance.
2. Was his conduct appropriate? Explain your answer.
Ans: No, his conduct (Achara) was not appropriate. Right conduct is essential for a stress-free life. By lying and giving in to peer pressure, he indulged in negative behavior which caused him unnecessary stress and fear.
3. Can you suggest some ways to get out of this conflicting situation?
Ans: He should have communicated truthfully with his friends that he could not skip class. By practicing right thinking (Vichara) and positive attitude, he could have guided himself toward appropriate behavior instead of succumbing to pressure.
4. What would you do, if you were in Ramesh’s place?
Ans: If I were in Ramesh’s place, I would have prioritized truthfulness (Satya) and my responsibilities. I would have refused to skip the class, avoiding the stress and guilt of lying to my parents.
5. Do you think the yogic principles of Yama (restraint) and Niyama (observance) help to develop control on our desires and emotions and lessen our stress?
Ans: Yes, Yamas (social codes of conduct like truthfulness/non-stealing) and Niyamas (personal observances) act as universal codes of conduct. They help us follow high standards, develop control over our desires and emotions, bring peace and harmony, and thereby greatly lessen our stress.
Activity 8.5 (Page 138)
Shreya is an outgoing and independent girl. She does not like to be dictated by her parents. Her parents are worried as they think that she has been wasting her time and energy on futile, trivial and useless things. One day, her parents asked her to study while she wanted to finish the novel which she was reading. At this, Shreya lost her temper and started shouting at her parents.
Questions
1. Was Shreya’s behaviour towards her parents appropriate?
Ans: No, Shreya’s behavior (Vyavahara) was inappropriate. Shouting and losing her temper at her parents shows a lack of emotional control.
2. Were her attitude and thinking responsible for this kind of behaviour?
Ans: Yes, her attitude and thinking (Vichara) were responsible. Because she had a negative attitude towards being dictated to by her parents, her thoughts led to inappropriate and stressful actions.
3. Suggest how she should have behaved.
Ans: She should have maintained positive thoughts and controlled her temper. According to yogic philosophy, right thinking leads to appropriate behavior (Vyavahara). Instead of shouting, she should have calmly and respectfully asked her parents for a little more time to finish reading her novel before starting her studies.
