Established in 1941, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira was founded by the Ramakrishna Mission, it was a fully residential degree college for boys affiliated with the University of Calcutta. ‘Vidyamandira’ name was given by Swami Vivekananda in 1898 who had envisioned such an institution modelled on the ancient Indian ‘Gurukula’ system. Swami Vimuktanandaji and Swami Tejasanandaji were the founding Secretary and the founding principal, respectively, in this institute. In April 2010 the University Grants Commission has recognized Ramkrishna Mission Vidyamandira as a ‘Centre of Potential for Excellence, and in June 2010 Vidyamandira has been awarded the ‘Autonomous’ status in academic affairs, implying that Ramkrishna Mission Vidyamandira will be able to frame the syllabi, introduce new course at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, formulate teaching-learning-evaluation methods and offer degrees of its own. Ramkrishna Mission Vidyamandira College now has offer 14 UG & 5 PG courses. All the courses are offered in Science, Social science, and Humanities Departments.
