A. Answer the following questions.
1. Who is the speaker in the poem?
Ans: The speaker is a school-going child. This is evident because he describes walking to school at ten in the morning and returning home at four in the afternoon.
2. Why does the speaker want to be a hawker?
Ans: The speaker wants to be a hawker because he admires the freedom the hawker appears to have. The speaker notes that there is nothing to hurry the hawker, no specific road he must take, no specific destination he must go to, and no fixed time when he must return home.
3. What does he like about the gardener?
Ans: The speaker likes that the gardener has the freedom to use his spade however he wishes and can soil his clothes with dust without getting into trouble. He appreciates that “nobody takes him to task” (scolds him) if the gardener gets wet or “baked in the sun,” and no one stops him from digging.
4. What does the speaker compare the street lamp to?
Ans: The speaker compares the street lamp to a “giant with one red eye in its head”.
5. On the basis of the poem that you have read, share the daily schedule of the speaker.
Ans: Based on the events described in the poem, the speaker’s schedule is as follows:
• 10:00 AM: The gong sounds, and the speaker walks to school.
• 4:00 PM: The speaker returns home from school.
• Dark/Evening: The speaker’s mother sends him to bed.

1. Why does the speaker admire people with different vocations?
Ans: The speaker, a young student bound by strict daily schedules and rules, admires people with different vocations because he perceives them as having the complete freedom that he lacks. He views their lives through an idealized lens, seeing “only the fun part of each job” rather than the difficulties.
Specifically, he admires them for the following reasons:
(i) Lack of Schedule: He envies the hawker because “there is nothing to hurry him on,” and he has no fixed road to take, no specific place to go, and no fixed time to return home.
(ii) Freedom from Discipline: He admires the gardener because he can do “what he likes with his spade” and get his clothes dirty with dust without anyone scolding him or taking “him to task”.
(iii) Independence at Night: He wishes to be a watchman because he could walk the streets all night chasing shadows with a lantern and, unlike the speaker who is sent to bed by his mother, the watchman “never once goes to bed in his life”
2. What are the things that you observe on your way to school and your way back home?
Ans: Here is what I observe during my daily commute:
On my way to school: When the gong sounds ten in the morning and I walk down our lane, I meet a hawker who is crying out, “Bangles, crystal bangles!”. I observe that there is nothing to hurry him, no specific road he must take, no particular place he must go to, and no fixed time when he must return home.
On my way back home: When I return from school at four in the afternoon, I look through the gate of a house and see a gardener digging the ground. I observe that he does exactly what he likes with his spade and soils his clothes with dust. I also notice that no one scolds him or takes him to task if he gets baked in the sun or gets wet.
