The Rainbow
Chapter: 3
| Unit – 2: My Colourful World |
Let us Think
A. Answer the following:
1. Explain the meaning of the word ‘bow’ used in the poem.
Ans: The word ‘bow’ refers to the rainbow that bridges heaven and earth.
2. Which bridge does the poet like more and why?
Ans: The poet likes the rainbow (the bow that bridges heaven) more than the bridges on the rivers. This is because the poet states the rainbow “overtops the trees,” “builds a road from earth to sky,” and is “prettier far than these”.
3. The word ‘these’ is used for different things in stanzas one and two. What are the things for which ‘these’ has been used in each stanza?
Ans: Stanza One: ‘These’ refers to boats and ships (which sail on rivers and seas).
Stanza Two: ‘These’ refers to the bridges on the rivers.
4. State whether the following are True or False.
(a) Ships sail on the river.
Ans: False.
(b) Boats sail on the sea.
Ans: False.
(c) Bridges are built on the river.
Ans: True.
(d) A road is built from earth to the sky.
Ans: True.
B. Think and discuss.
1. What are the ways in which you can cross a river?
Ans: You can cross a river using boats, ships, or bridges.
2. Have you ever seen a rainbow in real life or in pictures? How did you feel?
Ans: Yes, I have seen a rainbow. I felt happy and amazed by the beautiful colours.
3. If you could walk on a rainbow, where do you think it would take you?
Ans: Since the poem says it “bridges heaven” and builds a road to the sky, it might take you to the clouds or to heaven.
