1. Why did the merchant keep the parrot in a cage of gold?
Ans: The merchant was rich and decided to keep his “bright and talkative” pet in a cage of gold, likely to reflect his wealth and the value he placed on the pet.
2. What made the parrot a favourite pet of the merchant?
Ans: The parrot had a “sharp mind” and frequently entertained the merchant with “stories and songs”.
3. What message did the parrot ask the merchant to convey to its friends?
Ans: The parrot asked the merchant to tell his friends in the jungle that he sent them “greetings from his cage”.
4. What happened after the merchant gave the message to the parrots?
Ans: As soon as the merchant finished speaking, one of the wild parrots “dropped like a stone from the tree and fell on the ground,” appearing to be dead.
5. How did the parrot escape from the cage?
Ans: When the merchant told his pet what happened in the forest, the pet parrot also fell to the floor of the cage. The merchant, thinking it was dead, placed it on the windowsill. The bird then “stirred, stretched its beautiful green wings and flew off into the open sky”.

1. If you were the merchant, how would you respond to the parrot’s request for freedom?
Ans: If I were the merchant, I would like to believe I would set the parrot free, even though it would be difficult. In the story, the merchant refused to open the cage because the parrot was “very dear” to him and he felt he could not bear to let it go. However, I believe that if you truly care for a living creature, you should prioritize its happiness over your own entertainment. The parrot clearly told the merchant that despite the good food, it longed for the “open skies and green trees”. While the merchant gave it a “cage of gold”, a cage is still a prison, and I would have chosen to let the bird “taste the joy of flying in the sky”.
2. Can you think of a real-life situation where intelligence is more useful than strength?
Ans: Yes, there are many situations where a “sharp mind” is better than physical power. In this story, the parrot was small and trapped in a metal cage; no amount of physical strength would have allowed it to break the bars. Instead, it used intelligence to trick the merchant into believing it was dead. A real-life example of this is bullying. If someone is being aggressive (using strength), fighting back physically often makes the situation worse. However, using intelligence—such as using humor to diffuse the tension, ignoring the bully to deny them satisfaction, or reporting the situation to an authority—is often the only way to “escape” the situation safely.
3. Which parrot from the chapter was actually ‘wise’ according to you? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans: In my opinion, both parrots displayed great wisdom, as they worked together to solve the problem.
• The Wild Parrot: This bird was wise because it acted quickly. Without speaking a word, it came up with a clever plan to drop “like a stone” to the ground. It knew this visual message would tell the pet parrot exactly what to do.
• The Pet Parrot: The pet was also wise because it had the “sharp mind” needed to decode the message. It realized its friend wasn’t actually dead, but rather showing it a trick. It was wise enough to act immediately, feigning death to get the merchant to place it on the “windowsill,” which was its gateway to freedom.
