THINK ABOUT IT
1. Why do the courtiers call the prince ‘the Happy Prince’? Is he really happy? What does he see all around him?
Ans: The courtiers call the prince “the Happy Prince” because when he was alive, he lived in the Palace of Sans Souci, “where sorrow is not allowed to enter.” He says, “My courtiers called me the Happy Prince, and happy indeed I was.” But after his death, he is not really happy. From his high pedestal, he sees “the ugliness and all the misery of my city,” and though his heart is made of lead, he cannot help weeping.
2. Why does the Happy Prince send a ruby for the seamstress? What does the swallow do in the seamstress’ house?
Ans: The Happy Prince sends the ruby to the seamstress because she is poor and her little boy is suffering from fever. The boy is asking for oranges, but his mother has nothing to give him except river water. She is busy embroidering flowers on a satin gown for one of the Queen’s maids of honour.
The swallow takes the ruby from the Prince’s sword, flies to the poor woman’s house, places the ruby on the table beside her thimble, and gently fans the sick boy’s forehead with its wings until he falls asleep.
3. For whom does the prince send the sapphires and why?
Ans: The Happy Prince sends his first sapphire to a young playwright who is trying to finish a play for the Director of the Theatre. The young man is cold, hungry, and too weak to write. The Prince asks the swallow to give him the sapphire so that he can sell it to a jeweller, buy firewood, and finish his play.
The Prince sends his second sapphire to a little matchgirl whose matches have fallen into the gutter and are spoiled. She is crying because her father will beat her if she does not bring home some money. The swallow drops the sapphire into the little girl’s hand.
4. What does the swallow see when it flies over the city?
Ans: When the swallow flies over the city, he sees the rich making merry in their beautiful houses, while the beggars are sitting at the gates. He also sees the white faces of starving children looking out of dark lanes, and two little boys lying under a bridge, trying to keep themselves warm because they are hungry.
5. Why did the swallow not leave the prince and go to Egypt?
Ans: The swallow does not leave the Prince and go to Egypt because he loves the Happy Prince and cannot leave him alone. After the Prince becomes blind, the swallow says, “You are blind now, so I will stay with you always.” He remains with the Prince, carries out his wishes, and finally dies at the Prince’s feet.
6. What are the precious things mentioned in the story? Why are they precious?
Ans: The two precious things mentioned in the story are the leaden heart of the Happy Prince and the dead swallow. They are precious because the Prince sacrificed all his gold and precious stones to help the poor, and the swallow gave up his journey to Egypt and even his life to serve the Prince and help those in need. Their kindness, love, and selfless sacrifice make them the most precious things in the city.
