THINK ABOUT IT
1. What are the two strange things the guru and his disciple find in the Kingdom of Fools?
Ans: The guru and his disciple find two strange things in the Kingdom of Fools:
(i) The people worked at night and slept during the day because the king had ordered day to be treated as night and night as day.
(ii) Everything in the market cost the same a single duddu, whether it was a measure of rice or a bunch of bananas.
2. Why does the disciple decide to stay in the Kingdom of Fools? Is it a good idea?
Ans: The disciple decides to stay in the Kingdom of Fools because everything is very cheap, and he can eat as much food as he wants for very little money. He ignores his guru’s warning and stays behind, enjoying bananas, rice, wheat, and ghee until he becomes very fat.
No, it is not a good idea. His decision proves foolish because later he is chosen to be executed simply because he is fat enough to fit the stake.
3. Name all the people who are tried in the king’s court, and give the reasons for their trial.
Ans: (i) The merchant: He is blamed because the wall of his house collapsed and killed a thief.
(ii) The bricklayer: He is accused of building a weak wall that collapsed.
(iii) The dancing girl: She is blamed for distracting the bricklayer while he was building the wall.
(iv) The goldsmith: He is accused because he delayed making the dancing girl’s jewellery, forcing her to walk up and down the street.
(v) The merchant (again): He is blamed because his father had placed the jewellery order, and the king declares that the son has inherited both his father’s wealth and his guilt.
4. Who is the real culprit according to the king? Why does he escape punishment?
Ans: According to the king, the merchant’s father is the real culprit because he had placed the jewellery order that caused all the events leading to the thief’s death. However, he escapes punishment because he is already dead. So, the king orders his son, the merchant, to be punished instead, saying that he has inherited both his father’s wealth and his guilt.
5. What are the Guru’s words of wisdom? When does the disciple remember them?
Ans: The Guru’s words of wisdom are: “This is a city of fools. This won’t last very long, and you can’t tell what they’ll do to you next.” The disciple remembers these words when he is arrested and taken to be executed simply because he is fat enough to fit the stake.
6. How does the guru manage to save his disciple’s life?
Ans: The guru saves his disciple’s life by using his wisdom and presence of mind. He tells the king that the new stake is the stake of the god of justice, and that whoever dies on it first will be reborn as the king, while the second person will be reborn as the minister. The foolish king believes him and, along with his minister, decides to be executed first. Thus, the guru and his disciple are released and their lives are saved.
