THINK ABOUT IT
1. In what way is Iswaran an asset to Mahendra?
Ans: Iswaran is a great asset to Mahendra because he is a devoted cook and helper. He follows Mahendra wherever he is posted, cooks delicious meals, washes his clothes, keeps the living place clean, and entertains him with interesting stories. He can also arrange fresh vegetables and cooking ingredients even in lonely places.
2. How does Iswaran describe the uprooted tree on the highway? What effect does he want to create in his listeners?
Ans:Instead of simply saying that he saw an uprooted tree, Iswaran describes it dramatically as an enormous bushy beast lying across the deserted road. Only when he goes closer does he realise that it is a fallen tree with dry branches. He tells the story in this way to create suspense, excitement, and curiosity in his listeners.
3. How does he narrate the story of the tusker? Does it appear to be plausible?
Ans:Iswaran narrates the story of the tusker in a highly dramatic and exciting manner. He describes how the mad elephant destroys fences, shops, and a school playground. He then claims that he bravely approached the elephant and knocked it down by striking its third toenail with a stick using a Japanese martial art technique. He even leaves the story unfinished for some time to increase the suspense before revealing the ending.
No, the story does not appear to be plausible. It seems highly exaggerated and unrealistic, especially the part where Iswaran alone brings down a wild elephant by hitting its third toenail.
4. Why does the author say that Iswaran seemed to more than make up for the absence of a TV in Mahendra’s living quarters?
Ans: The author says this because Iswaran was a fascinating storyteller. Every day, he entertained Mahendra with stories full of adventure, suspense, horror, and surprise endings. He narrated even ordinary incidents in a dramatic and interesting way, keeping Mahendra completely absorbed. Therefore, Mahendra never felt the absence of a television in his living quarters.
5. Mahendra calls ghosts or spirits a figment of the imagination. What happens to him on a full-moon night?
Ans: On a full-moon night, Mahendra wakes up on hearing a low moaning sound near his window. When he looks outside, he sees a dark, cloudy figure carrying a bundle. He is terrified and breaks into a cold sweat. Although he later convinces himself that it was only his imagination, Iswaran tells him the next morning that he had seen the female ghost. Frightened by this, Mahendra decides to leave the place.
6. Can you think of some other ending for the story?
Ans: Yes. One possible ending is that Mahendra decides to find out the truth about the ghost. The next night, he courageously goes outside and discovers that the “ghost” is only a shadow created by the moonlight and a tree. He realises that fear and imagination had deceived him. He laughs at himself, thanks Iswaran for his stories, and continues to stay there without any fear.
