THINK ABOUT IT
1. How does Toto come to grandfather’s private zoo?
Ans: Toto comes to Grandfather’s private zoo when Grandfather buys him from a tonga-driver for five rupees. The tonga-driver had tied the little monkey to a feeding-trough, and Grandfather felt that the monkey looked out of place there. So, he decided to add Toto to his private zoo.
2. “Toto was a pretty monkey.” In what sense is Toto pretty?
Ans: Toto was considered a pretty monkey because his bright eyes sparkled with mischief, his pearly white teeth were often displayed in a smile, and his long tail added to his good looks. His tail also served as a third hand, helping him hang from branches and pick up things that were out of reach.
3. Why does grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and how? Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto a dog?
Ans: Grandfather takes Toto to Saharanpur because he has to collect his pension. He carries Toto in a big black canvas kit-bag with some straw at the bottom so that the monkey cannot escape.
The ticket collector insists on calling Toto a dog because Toto suddenly pokes his head out of the bag at the railway turnstile. According to the ticket collector, Toto is an animal that must be charged as a dog, so Grandfather has to pay three rupees as Toto’s fare, even though Grandfather tries to explain that Toto is a monkey.
4. How does Toto take a bath? Where has he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?
Ans: Toto enjoys taking a bath in a large bowl of warm water. He first tests the temperature with his hand, then slowly steps into the water one foot at a time until the water reaches his neck. He rubs himself with soap and, after bathing, runs to the kitchen fire to dry himself. He has learnt this by watching the narrator take a bath.
Toto almost boils himself alive when he gets into a kitchen kettle filled with warm water kept on the fire for making tea. As the water becomes hotter, he keeps jumping up and down instead of getting out. Fortunately, Grandmother arrives in time and pulls him out before he is seriously hurt.
5. Why does the author say, “Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long”?
Ans: The author says this because Toto was extremely mischievous and destructive. He tore clothes and wallpaper, disturbed other animals, damaged utensils, threw plates and glasses, and broke a dish after eating all the pulao. Since the family could not afford the constant loss of clothes, dishes, curtains, and wallpaper, Grandfather finally sold Toto back to the tonga-driver for three rupees.
