THINK ABOUT IT
1. What are the things the child sees on his way to the fair? Why does he lag behind?
Ans: On his way to the fair, the child sees toy shops, a flowering mustard field, dragonflies, a black bee and butterflies, little insects and worms, a shower of flower petals, doves, crowds of people, sweet shops, flower garlands, colourful balloons, a snake-charmer playing the flute, and a merry-go-round.
He lags behind because he is fascinated by everything he sees on the way. He stops to look at the toys, tries to catch the dragonflies, watches the insects and worms, gathers the flower petals, and runs after the doves. His curiosity and excitement make him fall behind his parents repeatedly.
2. In the fair he wants many things. What are they? Why does he move on without waiting for an answer?
Ans: At the fair, the child wants a burfi, a garland of gulmohur flowers, colourful balloons, to listen to the snake-charmer’s music, and a ride on the merry-go-round. However, he moves on without waiting for an answer because he already knows that his parents will refuse his requests. He believes they will call him greedy, childish, or say that the things are cheap or unsuitable for him.
3. When does he realise that he has lost his way? How have his anxiety and insecurity been described?
Ans: The child realises that he has lost his way when he asks to ride the merry-go-round and turns around to find that his parents are nowhere to be seen. He becomes frightened and starts crying, “Mother, Father!” He runs here and there in panic, tears roll down his face, his clothes become muddy, and he feels helpless and insecure. Even in the crowded temple, he continues to cry desperately for his parents.
4. Why does the lost child lose interest in the things that he had wanted earlier?
Ans: The lost child loses interest in all the things he had wanted earlier because he misses his parents deeply. After getting separated from them, he no longer cares about sweets, flowers, balloons, the snake-charmer, or the merry-go-round. His only wish is to be reunited with his mother and father.
5. What do you think happens in the end? Does the child find his parents?
Ans: The story does not tell us what happens in the end. It ends without revealing whether the child finds his parents. It is likely that the kind man who helps the child continues searching for his parents and eventually reunites them. This ending is left to the reader’s imagination.
6. How to ensure not to get lost
Ans: (i) Always stay close to your parents or guardians.
(ii) Hold your parents’ or guardian’s hand in crowded places.
(iii) Do not wander away alone to look at toys or other attractions.
(iv) Memorise your parents’ phone numbers and home address.
(v) If you get separated, stay where you are and seek help from a police officer, security guard,
or another trusted adult.
(vi) Never go anywhere with a stranger.
