Textual Question & Answer

THINK ABOUT IT

1. What havoc has the super cyclone wreaked in the life of the people of Orissa?

Ans: The super cyclone caused widespread destruction in Orissa. Strong winds of about 350 km per hour, heavy rain, and giant sea waves washed away houses, trees, animals, and people. Villages were flooded, many people lost their lives, and thousands became homeless. Dead bodies of humans and animals floated in the floodwaters. In Kalikuda village alone, eighty-six people died and all ninety-six houses were destroyed. The survivors suffered from hunger, disease, and grief.

2. How has Prashant, a teenager, been able to help the people of his village?

Ans: Prashant showed great courage and leadership during the disaster. He organised a group of youths and elders to persuade a merchant to give rice for the hungry people. He formed a team of volunteers to clean the shelter, remove filth and dead bodies, and care for the injured. He also helped the people get regular food supplies by signalling helicopters. He arranged a shelter for orphaned children, encouraged women to join the food-for-work programme, organised sports activities for children, and helped widows and orphans rebuild their lives.

3. How have the people of the community helped one another? What role do the women of Kalikuda play during these days?

Ans: The people of the community worked together to face the disaster. The youths and elders collected food, cleaned the shelter, looked after the injured, and helped distribute relief materials. They also worked together to care for orphans and widows.

The women of Kalikuda played an important role by looking after the orphaned children in the temporary shelters. Later, they joined the food-for-work programme started by an NGO, helping to rebuild the village and support their families. They also shared the responsibility of caring for the children and the community during this difficult time.

4. Why do Prashant and other volunteers resist the plan to set up institutions for orphans and widows? What alternatives do they consider?

Ans: Prashant and the other volunteers oppose the government’s plan to set up institutions for orphans and widows because they believe that children would grow up without love and affection, while widows would suffer from stigma and loneliness in such institutions. Instead, they suggest that the orphans should be resettled within their own community. They propose creating new foster families, where childless widows could adopt and care for orphaned children, so that both could live with love, care, and emotional support.

5. Do you think Prashant is a good leader? Do you think young people can get together to help people during natural calamities?

Ans: Yes, Prashant is an excellent leader. Although he is only nineteen years old, he shows courage, responsibility, and selfless service. He organises food, forms volunteer teams, cleans the shelter, cares for the injured, helps orphaned children and widows, and motivates the community to rebuild their lives.

Yes, young people can come together to help during natural calamities. By working as volunteers, they can rescue people, distribute food and medicines, maintain cleanliness in relief camps, organise shelters, care for children and the elderly, and support relief and rehabilitation work. Prashant’s example proves that young people can play an important role in helping society during disasters.
