1. Darken the circle of the correct answer.
(i) Which part of the plant takes in carbon dioxide from the air for photosynthesis?
(a) Root hair.
(b) Leaf veins.
(c) Stomata.
(d) Sepals.
Ans: (c) Stomata.
(ii) The green colour of leaves of plants is due to:
(a) Chlorophyll.
(b) Xylem.
(c) Phloem.
(d) Stomata.
Ans: (a) Chlorophyll.
(iii) How many guard cells are present around the stoma?
(a) 4
(b) 3
(c) 2
(d) 5
Ans: (c) 2
(iv) Raw materials used by plants during photosynthesis include-
(a) Nitrogen and oxygen.
(b) Oxygen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
(c) Carbon dioxide and water.
(d) Water and minerals.
Ans: (c) Carbon dioxide and water.
2. Fill in the blanks:
(a) Plants use energy from the __________ to make ________.
Ans: Sun, food.
(b) During photosynthesis, plants take in ____________ and release ___________.
Ans: Carbon dioxide, oxygen.
3. State whether the following statements are true or false?
(a) The product of photosynthesis is not a protein.
Ans: True.
(b) A plant having red leaves cannot perform photosynthesis.
Ans: False.
4 Match the followings:
| Column-I | Column-II |
| (i) Chlorophyll | (a) Xylem |
| (ii) Stomata | (b) Leaf |
| (iii) Photosynthesis | (c) Guard cell |
| (iv) Transport of water | (d) Starch |
Ans:
| Column-I | Column-II |
| (i) Chlorophyll | (b) Leaf |
| (ii) Stomata | (c) Guard cell |
| (iii) Photosynthesis | (d) Starch |
| (iv) Transport of water | (a) Xylem |
5. Two statements are given below, one is Assertion and other is Reason.
Assertion: The green pigment present in the leaves of plant is called chlorophyll
Reason: This green pigment is responsible for the green colour of most of the plants.
Choose the appropriate answer from the following options:
(a) Both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) Assertion is true but Reason is false.
(d) Assertion is false but Reason is true.
Ans: (a) Both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of A.
6. Answer the following questions briefly.
(a) Name the sugar produced during photosynthesis.
Ans: The sugar produced during photosynthesis is glucose.
(b) What is the function of phloem in plants?
Ans: Phloem consists of thin tube-like structures that transport the food prepared in the leaves to all other parts of the plant, including seeds and roots.
(c) What is the role of stomata in the leaf for production of food?
Ans: Stomata are small pores on the leaf surface that facilitate the exchange of gases; they allow the carbon dioxide required for photosynthesis to enter the leaf.
(d) How would you test the presence of starch in leaves?
Ans: To test for starch, boil a leaf first in water and then in alcohol to remove its chlorophyll. After washing the leaf, add a few drops of dilute iodine solution. If the leaf turns blue-black, it indicates that starch is present.
(e) Write an experiment to show that oxygen is released during photosynthesis.
Ans: Place branches of a submerged water plant like Hydrilla in a beaker of water and cover them with a funnel. Invert a test tube filled with water over the funnel’s stem and place the setup in sunlight. After some time, bubbles will rise and collect at the top of the test tube, displacing the water. This gas is oxygen, which can be confirmed if it causes a glowing matchstick to produce a flame.
(f) Write the word equation of photosynthesis and respiration.
Ans:

7. Imagine a situation where all the plants, and tiny green organisms that perform photosynthesis suddenly disappeared from the Earth. What impact would it have on the air we breathe and the living organisms on the Earth?
Ans: If all plants and photosynthetic organisms disappeared, the primary source of food and oxygen for all other living beings would be gone. The oxygen in the air would not be replenished, and carbon dioxide levels would rise because it would no longer be absorbed for photosynthesis. Ultimately, this would make the Earth uninhabitable for most living organisms.
8. Which side of the leaf shown in the fig. 11.13 may contain more stomata?

Ans: The lower side (B) of the leaf contains more stomata.
Reason: The lower surface of a leaf usually has more stomata to reduce excessive water loss due to direct sunlight and heat.
