Air Around Us

Chapter: 15

Exercise

1 . What is the composition of air?

Ans: The composition of air are Water vapour, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, dust and smoke.

2. Which gas in the atmosphere is essential for respiration?

Ans: Oxygen in the atmosphere is essential for respiration.

3. How will you prove that air supports burning?

Ans: Air support burning can be proved by an experiment.

Fix two small candles of the same size in the middle of two shallow containers. Now, fill the containers with some water. Light the candles and then cover each one of them with an inverted glass. Observed carefully, the burning of the candle must be due to the presence of some components of air. Burning can occur only in the presence of oxygen. We see that one component of air is oxygen. now, the amount of air and hence its oxygen components inside each glass in our experiment, is limited. Most of this oxygen is used up by the burning candle, it can no longer burn and and blows out. Also, water rises up in the glass once the candle blows out. However, this rise in water level should not be associated with the amount of oxygen utilized in burning the candle.

4. How will you show that air is dissolved in water?

Ans: Take some water in a glass vessel or beaker. Heat it slowly on a tripod stand. Well before the water begins to boil, look carefully at the inner surface of the vessel. We see tiny bubbles on the inside. These bubbles come from the air dissolved in water. When you heat the water, to begin with the air dissolved in it escapes.

This experiment shows that air is dissolved in water.

5. Why does a lump of cotton wool shrink in water?

Ans: The lump of cotton wool shrinks in water because a lump of cotton wool has air among gaps of cotton fibers. When water replaces the air from these gaps, the cotton lump becomes heavy.

6. The layer of air around the earth is known as __________.

Ans: Atmosphere.

7. The component of air used by green plants to make their food is __________.

Ans: Carbon dioxide.

8. List five activities that are possible due to the presence of air.

Ans: The five activities that are possible due to the presence of air are:

(i) Photosynthesis.

(ii) Transpiration.

(iii) Respiration.

(iv) Winnowing.

(v) Cloud formation.

9. How do plants and animals help each other in the exchange of gasses in the atmosphere?

Ans: Animals and plants use oxygen from air during respiration and release carbon dioxide gas in air. Green plants also release oxygen gas by using carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. Hence, in this way plants and animals help each other in the exchange of gases in the atmosphere.
