Q.1. Define magnet and magnetism. 

Ans: A magnet is a rock or a piece of metal that can pull certain types of metal toward itself. The force of magnets, called magnetism, is a basic force of nature, like electricity and gravity. Magnetism works over a distance. This means that a magnet does not have to be touching an object to pull it. 

Q.2. What is magnetic poles? 

Ans: Magnetic pole, region at each end of a magnet where the external magnetic field is strongest. A bar magnet suspended in Earth’s magnetic field orients itself in a north – south direction. The north-seeking pole of such a magnet, or any similar pole, is called a north magnetic pole.

Q.3. What is the basis law of magnetic poles? 

Ans: A basic law of magnetism is that unlike poles attract each other. Two bar magnets can illustrate this. One is hung so that it swings freely. A pole of the second is brought, in turn, near each of the two ends of the hanging magnet.

Q.4. What are the basic properties of magnets? 

Ans: (a) A magnet attracts magnetic materials towards itself.

(b) A freely suspended bar magnet always aligns in the north-south direction.

(c) Unlike poles attract each other and like poles repel each other.

Q.5. What is artificial magnet?

Ans: Magnets that are made by humans from magnetic substances are called artificial magnets. They can be made in different shapes and sizes like a bar magnet, horseshoe magnet, etc.

Ans: Magnetic Field is the region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge within which the force of magnetism acts.

Q.7. Define magnetic line of force. 

Ans: Magnetic lines of force determine the alignment and orientation of miniature test magnets in a magnetic field. 

1. Magnetic lines of force start from the north pole and end at the south pole. 

2. They are continuous through the body of magnet 

3. Magnetic lines of force can pass through iron more easily than air.

4. Two magnetic lines of force can not intersect each other. 

5. They tend to contract longitudinally. 

6. They tend to expand laterally.

Q.8. What is solenoid? 

Ans: A solenoid is a variety of electromagnet consisting of a copper wire coil wound tightly into a helix, an iron or steel housing, and a mobile plunger made of magnetic material.

Q.9. What is direct current? 

Ans: Direct Current is one type of electric current that flows in only one direction, it does not change direction. It does not change direction and flows in only one direction, due to this gives its name DC or Direct current. 

Q.10. What is alternating current? 

Ans: The current that changes its magnitude and polarity at regular intervals of time is called an alternating current.

Q.11. Name an instrument used determine the direction.

Ans: A compass or a magnetic needle is the instrument to find direction. 

Q.12. What is an electric motor? 

Ans: Electric motors are devices that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, usually in the form of rotational motion. In simple terms, they are devices that use electric power to generate motive power.

Ans: The primary use of an electric fuse is to protect electrical equipment from excessive current and to prevent short circuits or mismatched loads.

Ans: Live wires red, neutral is black and earth wire is green. 

Q.15. What is frequency of A.C. supplied in India? 

Ans: The frequency of Alternating Current in India is 50 Hz.
