Chapter: 22
| Module – VI: Chemistry of Elements |
INTEXT QUESTIONS 22.1
1. Explain primary valence.
Ans: Primary valence corresponds to the oxidation state of the central metal ion.
It is satisfied by negative ions only.
2. Explain secondary valence.
Ans: Secondary valence of the metal corresponds to coordination number and is satisfied by negative ions or neutral molecules.
3. What is the number of the secondary valence in the following: [Cr(H₂O)₆] Cl₃ and [Co(NH₃)₅Cl]Cl₂ ?
Ans: In both secondary valance is 6.
4. What is shape associated with a six-coordinated complex?
Ans: Octahedral.
5. How many types of shapes are possible for four-coordinate complexes?
Ans: Two i.e. Tetrahedral or square planar.

(iv) [Ni(en)₃]²⁺
Ans: (i) +2
(ii) +3
(iii) +3
(iv) +2
3. Give an example of a chelate ligand.
Ans: EDTA.
4. Give one example of each monodentate, bidentate and polydenatate ligand.
Ans: NH₃, ethylenediammine and EDTA.
5. What is the oxidation and coordination number of Co in this [Co(en)₂(H₂O)CN]²⁺ complex ion Which ligand is bidentate in the above complex?
Ans: +3, 6, Ethylenediammine.
INTEXT QUESTIONS 22.3
1. Write down the name of the following complexes:
(a) [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+
(b) (NH4)3[Cr(NCS)6]
(c) Ni(CO)4
(d) K4[Fe(CN)6]
(e) [Cr(en)3]Cl3
Ans: (i) Tetraamminedichlorocobalt (III) ion.
(ii) Ammonium-hexaisothiocyanatochromae (III).
(iii) Tetracarbonylnickel (0).
(iv) Potassium-hexacyanoferrate (II).
(v) Tris(ethylenediamine) chromium (III) chloride.
2. Write down the formula of the following:
(a) Tetrachloronickelate(II).
(b) Pentaamminenitrocobalt(III) ion.
(c) Potassium hexacyanoferrate(III).
(d) Dichlorobis(ethylenediammine) chromium(III) ion.
Ans: (i) [NiCl₄]²⁻
(ii) [Co(NH₃)₅NO₂]²⁺
(iii) K₃[Fe(CN)₆]⁻
(iv) [Cr(en)₂Cl₂]⁺.
INTEXT QUESTIONS 22.4
1. Name the type of hybridization present in: [Co(NH₃)₆]³⁺.
Ans: d²sp³.
2. [Fe(CN)₆]³⁻ is diamagnetic or paramagnetic?
Ans: [Fe(CN)₆]³⁻ is paramagnetic because it has one unpaired electron.
3. [NiCl₄]²⁻ and Ni(CO)4 have sp³ or dsp² hybridization?
Ans: Both the complexes have sp³ (tetrahedral) hybridization.
4. Which one is diamagnetic: [Ni(CN)₄]²⁻ or [NiCl₄]²⁻?
Ans: [Ni(CN)₄]²⁻ is diamagnetic because it is square planar (dsp² hybridization). It has no unpaired electron.
5. What type of hybridization is shown by (i) inner and (ii) outer orbital complexes?
Ans: Inner – d²sp³, outer – sp³d².
6. [FeF₆]⁴ is paramagnetic but [Fe(CN)₆]⁴⁻ is diamagnetic. explain by CFT.
Ans: F– is weak field ligand therefore electron will be filled t₂g⁴eg⁰² (i.e. four unpaired electron) therefore paramagnetic but CN– is strong field ligand so electronic configuration will be t₂g⁶eg⁰ (no unpaired electron).
7. Which is strong field ligand F– or CN–.
Ans: F– weak field CN– strong field ligand.
INTEXT QUESTIONS 22.5
1. Name two elements which are extracted by complexation.
Ans: Gold and silver are extracted by cyanide process.
2. What is the use of EDTA in medicine?
Ans: EDTA forms soluble complex with elements. It is used in the treatment of lead poisoning.
3. Name the compound of platinum which is used as anticancer agent?
Ans: Cis-platin.
4. Give two uses of complexes in qualitative analyses?
Ans: [Cu(NH₃)₄]²⁺ & [Ni(DMG)₂].
5. Write down geometrical isomers of Pt(NH₃)Cl₂.
Ans: Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂ (a square-planar Pt(II) complex) shows geometrical isomerism.
It has two geometrical isomers:
(i) cis-Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂
- The two NH₃ ligands are adjacent to each other.
- The two Cl⁻ ligands are also adjacent.
(ii) trans-Pt(NH₃)₂Cl₂
- The two NH₃ ligands are opposite to each other.
- The two Cl⁻ ligands are opposite.
Thus, the geometrical isomers are cis and trans forms.
6. [Co(NH₃)₅SCN]²⁺ and [Co(NH₃)₅NCS)²⁺ is the example of…….
Ans: Linkage isomerism Fe²⁺ = 3d⁶.
