1. Explain the relationship between environment and society.

Ans: There is a deep interrelationship between environment and society, as society is dependent on the environment. The origin, development, and daily life of society are closely connected with various components of the environment such as air, water, soil, forests, and climate. Humans utilize these environmental elements to build their livelihoods, homes, cultures, and the entire social structure.

For example, the life of the riverine Mishing community revolves around the river. Their food, agriculture, house construction, use of boats, and traditional festivals are all associated with the river. Similarly, societies in hilly regions depend on forest resources for their way of life.

Humans also carry out various activities for their convenience such as clearing forests for agriculture, diverting rivers, establishing industries, or urbanization. These activities disrupt the natural balance, resulting in pollution, climate change, and natural disasters.

Therefore, the relationship between environment and society is interdependent, and it is essential to maintain mutual protection and sustainability through awareness.

2. Explain the concept of ecosystem and its components.

Ans: Every society has its own ecological basis. This ecological foundation is deeply connected with the ecosystem. An ecosystem is a network of physical and biological processes in which humans are also an important component. Mountains, rivers, seas, plains, plants, animals  all of these are part of the ecosystem, and the science that studies the relationships among all these elements is known as environmental science.

When studying a particular place from the perspective of environmental science, it becomes necessary to also study the geography and climatology (humidity science) of that place. That is to say, the environmental science of a place is closely related to its geography and climatology.

Additionally, it is observed that there is a significant relationship between humans and the ecological factors of any place. When people live in a certain area, their way of living is influenced by the local environment and ecosystem. Furthermore, the society of that area also performs certain cultural activities based on the components of the environment.

3. Discuss climate change and its impacts.

Ans: Climate change refers to long-term changes in global temperature and weather patterns, primarily caused by greenhouse gases emitted by human activities—such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, etc. These gases trap the Sun’s heat in the atmosphere and create a “greenhouse effect,” which is leading to a steady increase in the Earth’s average temperature.

As a result of this global warming, the polar ice caps are melting, causing sea levels to rise, which threatens coastal areas with flooding. Moreover, climate uncertainty has increased, resulting in more frequent events such as droughts, excessive rainfall, cyclones, and floods.

This has had a profound impact on agricultural production, water supply, forest resources, biodiversity, and human health. For example, droughts or excessive rain can damage crops, cause water shortages, and increase heat-related illnesses. Therefore, climate change is a critical global issue that requires combined scientific, political, and social efforts to find a solution.
