Early life and education of Sushmita Dev
Sushmita Dev an Indian politician was born on September 25, 1972, at Silchar into a veteran Indian National Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev and Bithika Dev, a legislator of Silchar of Assam assembly. Her father Santosh Mohan Dev was a Member of Parliament (MP) and Cabinet Minister of India.
Sushmita Dev had pursued her B.A. from Miranda House, Bar-at-Law, an LLB from University of Delhi. After completing her B.A, she enrolled at Inns of Courts School of Law, London and King’s College London, UK.

Sushmita Dev was appointed as the chairperson of the Silchar Municipal Board, Assam in 2009, and she held the position till 2014. Dev was elected as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2011. In 2014, she contested the Lok Sabha election from the Silchar constituency and won on the ticket of the Indian National Congress. In 2019, she quit the party. From 9 September 2017 to 16 August 2021, she served as the president of the All India Mahila Congress. She was also appointed as the Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal backed by the All India Trinamool Congress on October 4 2021. Earlier in 2014, she was also elected as the Lok Sabha member in the general elections backed by the Indian National Congress. In April 2018, she was designated as a member of The Central Advisory Commitment for the National Cadet Crops. In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Sushmita Dev was defeated with a margin of 81596 votes by Dr. Rjdeep Roy, a BJP candidate from Assam, as a result Sushmita Dev lost the 2019 Lok Sabha election, due to which Dev left the Indian National Congress in 2019 and joined the All India Trinamool Congress in 2021 that sent her to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal.
Several media reports have claimed that Sushmita Dev has resigned from the party after she was unhappy with seat-sharing formula between the Congress and the All-India United Democratic Front (AIADMK) for the upcoming assembly elections in Assam. However, the party dropped the reports and said that women’s wing chief is a “very essential part” of the Congress. “She has not resigned,” the Congress said in its report on Sushmita Dev’s resignation, adding that the Congress has clarified that the All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev has not resigned from the party. Speaking on the report of her resignation, Congress leader and Member of Parliament Pradyut Bordoloi said Dev is a part of the Independence Congress and a lot with us. “She has a lot with us. She is a very essential part of the Congress. She is our party’s respected leader,” said Bordolo, a Member of Parliament from the Congress.
