A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal
Chapter: 21
| POETRY SECTION |
Thinking about the Poem:
1. “A slumber did my spirit seal,” says the poet. That is, a deep sleep ‘closed off his soul (or mind). How does the poet react to his loved one’s death? Does he feel bitter grief? Or does he feel a great peace?
Ans: The poet does not show bitter grief or anger. Instead, he feels a calm and deep peace.
When he says “A slumber did my spirit seal”, it means he was in a kind of emotional sleep or numbness. Because of this state, he had no human fears and did not think about the possibility of her death.
After realizing her death, the tone of the poem remains quiet and accepting, not full of loud sorrow. The poet accepts her death as a natural part of life and finds comfort in knowing that she has become one with nature.
2. The passing of time will no longer affect her, says the poet. Which lines of the poem say this?
Ans: These lines show that time no longer has any effect on her:
“She seemed a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.”
These lines mean she is beyond time and aging, because she is no longer alive.
3. How does the poet Imagine her to be, after death? Does he think of her as a person living in a very happy state (a ‘heaven’)? Or does he see her now as a part of nature? In which lines of the poem do you find your answer?
Ans: The poet does not imagine her living happily in heaven. Instead, he imagines her as a part of nature and the earth.
These lines show this idea:
“Rolled round in earth’s diurnal course
With rocks and stones and trees.”
This means she has become part of the natural world, moving with the earth along with rocks, stones, and trees.
