Chapter: 19

POETRY SECTION

1. Can a “simple jab of the knife” kill a tree? Why not?

Ans: No, a simple jab of the knife cannot kill a tree. Because a tree is very strong and has grown over many years. Its roots are deep inside the earth, so it can heal itself and grow again even after being cut.

2. How has the tree grown to its full size?

Ans: Words showing its life and activity:

The tree grows slowly by taking nutrients from nature:

  • consuming the earth.
  • feeding upon its crust.
  • absorbing sunlight, air, water.
  • sprouting leaves.
  • rising out of the earth.

These words show the tree is a living, growing organism.

3. What is the meaning of “bleeding bark”? What makes it bleed?

Ans: Bleeding bark means the tree releases sap (liquid) when it is cut. It bleeds because the axe or knife cuts and injures the tree’s outer layer (bark).

4. The poet says “No” in the beginning of the third stanza. What does he mean?

Ans: The poet means that cutting or chopping the tree is still not enough to kill it. Even after cutting, the tree will grow again. So the root must be removed completely.

5. What is the meaning of “anchoring earth” and “earth-cave”?

Ans: Anchoring earth → The soil that holds the tree firmly through its roots.

Earth-cave → The deep underground place where the roots remain hidden.

6. What does he mean by “the strength of the tree exposed”?

Ans: The roots are the real strength and life of the tree. When they are pulled out of the soil, its life source becomes visible and the tree becomes weak and dies.

7. What finally kills the tree?

Ans: After uprooting, the tree dries in the sun and air —

  • it browns, hardens, twists and withers.
  • This drying process finally kills the tree.
