Chapter: 14

POETRY SECTION

Thinking About the Poem:

1. What are the things the wind does in the first stanza?

Ans: In the first stanza, the wind breaks the shutters of the windows, scatters papers, throws books off the shelf, tears their pages, and brings rain. The poet shows how the wind causes disturbance and destruction by attacking weak things.

2. Have you seen anybody winnow grain at home or in a paddy field? What is the word in your language for winnowing? What do people use for winnowing?

Ans: Yes, I have seen people winnowing grain. In my language, winnowing is called phaloni. People generally use a winnowing basket to separate grain from chaff by letting the wind blow away the lighter particles.

3. What does the poet say the wind god winnows?

Ans: The poet says that the wind god winnows frail and weak things—such as weak houses, weak doors, weak wood, weak bodies, weak lives, and weak hearts. Like chaff, all fragile things are separated and crushed by the wind.

4. What should we do to make friends with the wind?

Ans: To make friends with the wind, the poet advises us to build strong homes, fix the doors firmly, and make our bodies and hearts strong. In a symbolic sense, we must make ourselves mentally and physically strong so that hardships (wind) cannot defeat us.

5. What do the last four lines of the poem mean to you?

Ans: The last four lines mean that the wind destroys weak fires but helps strong fires grow even bigger. Similarly, challenges destroy weak people but strengthen those who are brave and determined. Hardships become helpful when we have courage and inner strength.

6. How does the poet speak to the wind—in anger or with humour? What is your response to “the wind crumbling lives”? Is it like the poet’s?

Ans: The poet speaks to the wind with a mixture of humour and complaint, not with bitter anger. He accepts that the wind breaks weak things but teaches us to become strong instead of blaming it. My response is similar: difficulties can break weak people, but they make strong people even stronger. So, instead of fearing challenges, we should prepare ourselves to face them.
