2. 10 people from Areema’s town walk to the old age home everyday to help the senior citizens of the town. The distance travelled by each person is shown in the following table. Calculate the value of the mean, median and mode of the distance travelled:

Person’s nameDistance walked in kms(To help the senior citizens in old age home)
Ahmad2
Bela4
Celia2
Deepak3
Emily3
Farida2
Gauri1
Hemant3
Isha3
Jasbir3

Ans: Here is the shortened, step-by-step solution for your distance dataset:

{2, 4, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1, 3, 3, 3}  where N=10.1. Mean (Average)

Mean(X) = Sumofallscores (ΣΧ)/Totalnumberofscores(N)

overline X = (2 + 4 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 3)/10 = 26/10 = 2.7km

2. Median (Middle Value)Step 1: Arrange in ascending order:

{1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4}

Step 2: Since N is even (10), take the average of the two middle terms (5th and 6th values):

Median = 3+3/2 = 3km

3. Mode (Most Frequent Value)

Count the frequencies:

1 km: 1 time

2 km: 3 times

3 km: 5 times (Highest frequency)

4 km: 1 time

Mode = 3 km

Summary of Results

Mean: 2.6 km

Median: 3.0 km

Mode: 3.0 km

(b) Continuous.

(c) Discontinuous.

(d) None of the above.

Ans: (b) Continuous.

(iii) In a histogram the frequency is shown as:

(a) a circle.

(a) Bar diagram.

(b) Histogram.

(c) Frequency polygon.

(d) None of the above.

Ans: (c) Frequency polygon.

(v) In order to draw a frequency polygon,____________:

(a) A histogram should be drawn.

(b) A bar diagram should be drawn.

(c) Both, histogram and bar diagram, should be drawn.

(d) No other diagram is required.

Ans: (d) No other diagram is required.

Intext Questions 5.6

(i) A pie chart depicts the data as a proportional part of a ____________. (Fill in the blank)

Ans: Circle.

TERMINAL EXERCISES

1. Data indicating the number of months a person spends on tours, while holding a job is as follows:

3; 15; 16; 4; 11; 12; 13;

15; 16; 2; 6; 4; 13; 8; 11; 15; 16; 6; 7

Calculate the mean, median and mode from the above data.

Ans: The total number of observations is N=19.

(i) Calculating the Mean:

X = Xₙ

X = 3 + 15 + 16 + 4 + 11 + 12 + 13 + 15 + 16 + 2 + 6 + 4 + 13 + 8 + 11 + 15 + 16 + 6 + 7 = 193

Mean = 193 ÷ 19 = 10.16

(ii) Calculating the Median: Arrange the raw data in ascending order:

Since N = 19 (an odd number), the median is the (N + 1) ÷ 2-th term.

Median Position = (19 + 1) ÷ 2 = 10th term

The 10th term in our sorted list is 11.

Median = 11

(iii) Calculating the Mode: By counting the occurrences (frequencies) of each score:

15 occurs 3 times

16 occurs 3 times

All other scores occur fewer than 3 times.

Since both 15 and 16 share the highest frequency, this distribution is bimodal.

Mode = 15 and 16

2. Aptitude Test Comprehension ScoresAn aptitude test was conducted for 10 students. The scores on mathematical comprehension were as follows:

10, 8, 6, 12, 8, x, 2x, 2, 5, 7

The mean of the scores is 7. Find the value of x and 2x. Also find the median and mode of the data.

Ans: Here, N = 10 and Mean (X̄) = 7.

(i) Finding x and 2x

Mean = Sum of all scores ÷ N

7 = (10 + 8 + 6 + 12 + 8 + x + 2x + 2 + 5 + 7) ÷ 10

7 = (58 + 3x) ÷ 10

70 = 58 + 3x

3x = 12

x = 4

2x = 2(4) = 8

Therefore, x = 4 and 2x = 8.

(ii) Finding the Median

After replacing x = 4 and 2x = 8, the dataset is:

10, 8, 6, 12, 8, 4, 8, 2, 5, 7

Arrange the dataset in ascending order:

2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 8, 10, 12

Since N = 10 (an even number), the median is the average of the 5th and 6th terms.

5th term = 7

6th term = 8

Median = (7 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7.5

(iii) Finding the Mode

The score 8 occurs most frequently (3 times).

Mode = 8
