1. What does the author notice one Sunday afternoon? What is his mother’s reaction? What does she do?

Ans: One Sunday afternoon, while the author was doing his homework, he noticed smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling. Soon, the whole roof was engulfed in flames. His mother first ran out of the house carrying a small metal box containing important documents. Then, in a panic, she ran back into the burning house to save his late father’s pictures and letters, which were her only memories of him.

2. Why does he break down in tears after the fire?

Ans: The author breaks down in tears because, after the fire was put out, he realises that his beloved cat is missing. Along with the loss of his house and belongings, the thought of losing his pet becomes too much for him to bear. He feels overwhelmed by the new school, the fire, and the disappearance of his cat, and cries bitterly because of this great loss.

3. Why is the author deeply embarrassed the next day in school? Which words show his fear and insecurity?

Ans: The author is deeply embarrassed because he has to go to school wearing the same clothes he had worn to church, borrowed tennis shoes, and without his books, homework, or backpack, all of which were destroyed in the fire. He feels awkward and different from the other students.

4. The cat and the author are very fond of each other. How has this been shown in the story? Where was the cat after the fire? Who brings it back and how?

Ans: The deep affection between the author and his cat is shown throughout the story. The author had rescued the cat when she was a kitten, and she was always close to him. She would lie on his papers while he did his homework, purr loudly, play with his pen, and even climb into his pocket and fall asleep when she was a kitten. After the fire, the cat became frightened and ran over a mile away. A kind woman found her, took care of her, and tried to find the owner using the phone number on the cat’s collar. When she finally traced the author, she brought the cat back to him, making him overjoyed.

5. What actions of the schoolmates change the author’s understanding of life and people, and comfort him emotionally? How does his loneliness vanish and how does he start participating in life?

Ans: The author’s schoolmates showed great kindness after learning about the fire. They collected money and bought him school supplies, notebooks, clothes, jeans, tops, and sweatsuits. Many students who had never spoken to him before introduced themselves, invited him to their homes, and expressed genuine concern for him. Their love and support touched him deeply and made him realise that there were many kind and caring people around him. As a result, his loneliness disappeared, he made new friends, regained his confidence, and started taking part in life again.

6. What is the meaning of “My cat was back and so was I”? Had the author gone anywhere? Why does he say that he is also back?

Ans: The sentence “My cat was back and so was I” means that the author had regained his happiness, confidence, and emotional strength. He had not gone anywhere physically. After the fire, the loss of his home, his belongings, and especially his cat had left him lonely, insecure, and heartbroken. When his beloved cat was found and returned to him, and after receiving love and support from his new friends, he felt that his old cheerful self had returned. Thus, he says that he was also “back.”
