Early Life of Dipali Barthakur

Dipali Barthakur who grew up in a cultural environment composed music with father Vishwanath Barthakur and elder brothers Bhupen and Bhaben Barthakur at her residence. Later Barthakur who has immense passion for music since her childhood has been able to built up her talent through ‘Maina Mail.’

Barthakur while studying in school The song “Mur Bupai Lahori/Napaiso Ahari” composed by Leela Gogoi in1958, With this title song Barthakur started her musical journey by performing music at Akashvani Guwahati Centre and since then she has not had to stop anywhere.

The song titled ‘Bandhu Homoi Pale Amar Phale Abar Ahi Jaba’ performed by the recognised artist Dipali Barthakur from the radio station enabled her to occupy a unique place in the minds of the the Assamese audience. Barthakur’s first film to sing as a background singer is “Lachit Barphukan”. The film was released in 1959, and the title song was sung by Dipali Barthakur “Aabegor Bukusa Bobo Moi Nuaru, Joubone Amaoni Kore.”

Later some of the evergreen songs sung by Barthakur are – ‘Bandhu Homoi Pale Amar Phale Abar Ahi Jaba’,  ‘Senai Moi Jaudei’, ‘Agoli Kalapat lore ki Chore’, ‘Junbai E Beji Eti Dia’, ‘Dale Daale Gai Kuli Bulbuli’, ‘Jundhone Joonalite Torbotik Sai’, ‘Konman Borokhire Sip’, ‘Hunor Kharu Nelage Muk Biyar Babe Aai’ etc.

But unfortunately Barthakur was diagnosed with motor-neuron disease in 1968 when she was just 27 years old. This incurable illness gradually blocked the beautiful voice of Barthakur. Because of which no songs could be composed later by Barthakur, who was termed as the Nightingale of Assam. The song “Luito Najabi Boi” sung in 1969 by Dipali Barthakur was the last song in her life sung by her. After that she began suffering from a severe motor neuron disease which hindered her singing and forced to use a wheelchair.

Dipali Barthakur married renowned Assamese writer Binanda Chandra Barua’s son, an eminent Indian artist and painter from Assam, Neel Pawan Barua in 1976.

Barthakur, who held a memorable prestigious place in the Assamese music world, was honoured with the award Padma Shri by the government in1998.
