Early Life and Education of Adil Hussain

Adil Hussain was born in Goalpara district of Assam into an Assamese Muslim family in 1963. His childhood has been spent in Assam. His father was a professional teacher. He was the youngest of a total of 7 children. Hussain acted in plays held at the school etc. He left home at the age of 18 and enrolled at B. Borooah College in Guwahati to study philosophy. He played satirical roles in plays during his college days. He also mimicked popular Bollywood actors in between the performances of a local stand-up comedian group, the Bhaya Mama Group. He worked as a stand-up comedian for six years, he then joined a mobile theatre and worked on some local films. He thus spent nearly six years in Assam. From 1990 to 1993, he studied acting at the National School of Drama in Delhi. He then got a scholarship from the Charles Wallace India Trust and was able to pursue higher acting education at Drama Studio London in London.

Career of Adil Hussain

After returning to India in 1994, Hussain  joined the mobile ‘Hangul Theatre’ in  Assam and went back to Delhi after working for three years. He started his stage career in Delhi but continued his acting education under the supervision of Khalid Tyabji. After Tyabji, he studied acting under the supervision of “Swapan Bose” at “Sri Aurobindo Ashram” in Pondicherry, and later again took up acting lessons with Delhi’s “Dilip Shankar”.  As an actor, in 1999, Adil won the “Edinburgh Finge” award for the play “Othello: A Play in Black and White”. It was then that he was also praised for his performance in the play “Goodbye Desdemona” directed by Roysten Abel. He remained the artistic director and Trainer of the Society for Artists and Performers in Hampi from 2004 to 2007, and a visiting faculty at Royal Conservatory of Performing Arts, The Hague. He is also a visiting faculty at his alma mater, the National School of Drama.

In 2004 he made his Bengali film debut with Soha Ali Khan in the lead role of Iti Srikanta. On television, the BBC World Service Trust he played the lead role in detective serial Jasoos/Detective Vijay. Though he played two small roles in a few Assamese films, Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Kaminey’ and Sona Jain’s For Real, it was through his role in Abhishek Chaubey’s Isqiya released in 2010 that he managed to grab Bollywood’s attention. He played a pivotal role in Bollywood in the 2012 film Agent Vinod. In the same year, he appeared in Italian director Italo Spinelli’s Gangor, Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi.

He received high praise from the film critics for his performance in the comedy drama English Vinglish (2012) alongside Sridevi. He also won a lot of appreciation in New Jersey Independent South Asian Cine Fest for his performance in The Lessons in Forgetting. After these he acted in Aditya Bhattacharya’s Bombay Most Wanted and Partho Sen-Gupta’s Sunrise.

Hussain acted in an Assamese film 2014 Raag: The Rhythm of Love playing the role of Iqbal, which marked his first Assamese film in a lead role. Sringkhal and Rodor Sithi were his other Assamese release films. Hussain had his maximum number of film appearance in 2015 as he had releases in English, Hindi, Bengali and his first Tamil and Marathi movies. He debuted in Tamil movie with Yatchan playing a significant role of Selvam/Vetri. He also worked in his first Marathi movie Sunrise as Joshi. His Bengali film of the year was Arindam Sil’s mystery thriller Har Har Byomkesh as Zamindae Deepnarayan Singh.

Awards and Recognition

He won the National Film Award for his film Mukti Bhawan and Maj Rati Keteki in 2017. He won the IIFA Award for Best Actor in 2018 for his film Mukti Bhawan. He also won the Best Actor New Jersey Independent South Asian Cine Fest in 2012 for his film Lessons in Forgetting. He won the Best Actor Prag Cine Awards in 2014 for his fil Raag: The Rhythm of Love. In 2013, after having conducted a film workshop at University Film Club, Aligarh Muslim University, Hussain was granted a lifetime membership in the University’s film club. Hussain has been honoured by Sandeep Marwah with the life time membership of International Film and Television Club of Asian Academy of Film and Television at Noida Film City.
